  1. I enjoyed your review of several survival guns including the newer Savage M42 over under (.22LR/.410 shotgun). I have owned one for several years. It is well designed with the exception of (2) features. (1) The sights and the lack of a removable choke. Because of all the comments Savage made the newer models capable of breaking down into two major parts for storage. To gain the best efficiency and use out of my gun I made some modifications. I ground down and polished the front sight barrel band and I turned it into a proper barrel band. Just behind the band, I installed a ramp front sight with a Hi-Viz red colored fiber optic sight. I then removed the factory lame rear sight (which is mounted too close to the shooter's eye to see and align the "notch" properly. I replaced it with an adjustable peep sight which was made from a Williams adj. rear peep sight. That little survival gun shoots like a dream now! Very accurate out to 50 yards + with a .22 LR or a .410 slug. The shotgun is OK out to about 20 yards with #6 or #7.5 shot. Otherwise, the beauty of the little survival gun lies in its utility.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Savage 42 and glad the reviews helped. Those sound like some good mods and I will keep them in mind when I'm field testing the new Takedown 42.

      Cheers,

      Jason
