How did Joe Teti do in his first Dual Survival show?

So what's the verdict on Joe Teti's debut on the "Mars on Earth" episode of Dual Survival? Personally, I felt the show was respectable enough that I'd like to see more. No, Joe doesn't have quite the charisma of former host Dave Canterbury, and his goofy, Bear Gryllish "pissing in his helmet and drinking it" stunt was rather amusing, if misguided, but there is promise.

"Cody, I have some for you too-- would you like it straight from the tap or from the helmet?"

The other "say what?!" moment was when Joe insisted to Cody that they only burn "one stick at a time" to keep warm because of limited firewood. What in the heck is the military teaching people in its SERE School these days? As Cody pointed out in the show, you can't burn one stick at a time without a coal/ember bed beneath the stick to raise it to combustion temperature.

Joe Teti- "We burn this shi*** one stick at a time" - huh?

Even with these oddball moments, the show was still entertaining and informative. Joe's trick of twisting a parachute and its cordage into a usable climbing rope, allowing the two to rappel 50 feet and escape their predicament, was actually pretty trick. The personality clashes between Joe and Cody were also quite dramatic, but I expect this to tone down a bit as the show progresses, just as it did when Dave and Cody got to know each other better in Season One.

Hold on tight dude!

Conclusion

Dave Canterbury will be missed by many. He was unique and added greatly to the show's chemistry, but for now, I'm willing to give the new guy a try. I think I'll check out a few more episodes before delivering a final verdict.

  1. He lost all my support when he wanted to burn one stick at a time. Even if he was able to do it how much heat would it really provide? Not enough is my guess. Way to go Joe...

  2. Cody is still awesome... joe not so much. I think he is a standard issue military douche. Nothing special about him.

  3. You guys are lost.... I was 10th. Mountain. LRRP . we each carried a pack of birthday candles. The heat from one candle raises the temperature 10* degrees In our tents. ok, maybe 2 of those sticks (shaved up and done right) would have been more then enough to get going and burn, one at a time to give warmth, security, and mental well being. I would rather be in a make-shift, 3,4 sided shelter, burning one stick at a time, then playing, "Cuddle Bunny" with an overweight dirty hippy any time.
And I would eat a rattlesnake close to my camp then go another night with out food. Snake is good food. Seariously, could you see Cody bring in the pork? Grubs, really, maby if there is nothing else.... Honestly, Dave would have done the same.
I think Teti's doing great. He does not deal with b.s....... Can't wait to see more........ Go Duel Survival !

  4. Although i am not a survivalist i enjoy the show. I think joe did great...he displayed how important your mind is in a survival situation by wetting his mouth with his own urine. Although grotesque it displayed mind over matter in a survival situation..i look forward to the next episode

  5. thy argued too much reminds e of a bike show where all they did was fight and argue
life too short to watch that

  6. I agree in the sense that viewers probably related more to Dave than Cody, and that is a critical factor in many entertainment formats. Guess we'll have to watch a few more episodes with Joe to see if he gets more comfortable on camera and starts connecting with people watching the show.

  7. I agree, though it was such an obvious wilderness survival 101 mistake that I wonder if it wasn't done intentionally in order to show viewers what NOT to do in a survival situation? If not, then yes, Joe is really lacking in basic wilderness skills.

  8. While we love comments and welcome yours, I had to edit out your "d" word, so keep it clean- kids who are getting into bushcraft come here to read too.

  9. It wasn't awful but I still am not sure I'll stick with it. Dave's presence is greatly missed and I always enjoyed seeing Cody squirm. Not that Cody doesn't know stuff just he's rather for lack of a better term douchy about it whereas Dave was likable and didn't seem to talk down to the Audience.

  10. its all blown out of proportion anyway

  11. I agree, but I also remember seeing the first couple of episodes of Dave and Cody and I thought wow, these guys are way overdoing the drama, but it eventually settled down.

  12. My other first impression is that Dave is much more the woodsman than Joe.  So I'm wondering what real world skills he'll have to share when not in a combat zone.

Though if you're in a combat zone you definitely want Joe over Cody :)

  13. I'm undecided.  I thought the pee drinking was over the top.  I actually liked his side of bringing firewood a long into the canyons where they knew they would find none.  I wish they would have showed them getting that fire going during the night.  I'll keep watching and we'll see what happens.  I just hope most of the show doesn't circle around producer created drama, and just let it be educational.

  14. I agree, time will tell, but I liked it. I know that the "conflict" of survival strategies was part of the draw to Dual Survival originally, so that seems to still be there. Joe admits to not being a primitive skills expert, and as much as I liked Dave, I still felt Cody was/is way ahead in the native skills department.

  15. What mistake. But keep playing his resume at every break it helps me change the channel

  16. I like Joe I love his knife too!!! Saw and serrations woo hoo. Young tough take no crap kind of dude.
When I camp with my lazy buddy and I end up gathering all the wood, I'll tell him to burn it one stick at a time, of course you need some coals to keep it going. I dunno no big deal to me.

I think the show lacks creativity not character development.
I like Cody too.., DC is yesterdays news.

  17. My question was why waste a 50 ft parachute to climb down instead of just using some of the paracord that would have been holding the whole rig together?  They didn't have to sacrifice a valuable resource just to get down that drop, but I'm sure that was the direction they were given by the production team as well as suturing a scratch with biting ants!  I liked Joe, but knowing how much of the show is being dictated by the production crew has left a bad taste in my mouth for this show.  I'll still watch, but give me Les Stroud hauling his own gear and surviving on his own any day.

  18. Yeah, that part was definitely overdone. Hopefully they will tone it down more as the show progresses.

  19. The new guy is a douche. I will not continue to watch the show. I did like the way he did his ninja pose after he beheaded the snake.

  20. Joe Sucked. Bring Back Dave !

  21. I show the show tonight for the first time and loved it. I would love to do something like that it would be a great challenge and i love that. Keep up the great work and i am now a fan....Jerry M

  22. Joe teti's knife is an absolute copy of Mykel Hawke's Hellion. It seems Teti is a faker in more ways than one when it comes to survival.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Joe teti needs to take a survival 101 class. His lack of knowledge is a joke. Cody loves Joe because his dumb comments make him look like a wilderness god. Go home Joe - and don't forget to blindfold the cab driver...... hahaha! What a desperate TV wannabe. Dave, all is forgiven.

  24. Thanks for your service to our country, and I understand how someone might think that burning one stick at a time might sound like a perfect idea, but it's simply incorrect. As a Red Cross certified Wilderness and Remote First Aid Instructor, I can vouch for Cody's explanation of having to have a coal bed in order to burn one stick at a time. Candles  work on a different principle than combusting wood for heat.

Regarding the cuddling thing many people are speaking negatively of, this is actually a wilderness survival 101 technique that has been taught around the world around for decades.

  25. I'd say give him a chance. I need something to watch when survivorman isn't on. Teti can be a douche sometimes acting almost inmature, but he brings in a lot of experience to the show. The pig part had a lot of Rambo BS acting for some reason, not sure what that was about. Also when your show is staged with a camera crew, do you really need to kill a pig?

  26. Bravo! A comment about gear on a gear site!!!
Lets see what RMBC says about the knife...

  27. Why is Cody Awesome? And Joe a dou*** ?
If the idea was to have a military man???
Then accept his actions...Because Dave lied WINK WINK he was fired and replaced with A REAL GI JOE  Cody has said as much over and over again. a badass.
I don't think JOE is standard issue I think he is top of the line. Remember this he has been in REAL combat no TV crew to follow him around.....his survival.  has BEEN REAL LIFE.   This is after all only a TV show...Not real......Even if we don't see the camera men they are still there. I am sure someone remembered matches and water
I have been hiking  this great beautiful world (Mother Earth) for MORE that 20+ years and In all that time I have never felt that I was about about die at any minute. Don't get me wrong I think the more you know the less chance you have of making a mistake...And for that I give Cody credit where credit is due...I don't really know why he feels he is doing us a favor by trying to scare the poop out of us.
Zombies are not real either at least not yet

Thanks to all our service men and women. and yes rescue crews and anyone who actually puts their life on the line for country and for their fellow man.

  28. Hey Woodburner,

I'm not really into large knives these days (I carry a small 4.35 " Mora Black Carbon Bushcraft knife). Big knives definitely have worthwhile traits and are loved by many, but just I prefer a good, thin-profiled hatchet to a large knife, coupled with a Mora knife for bushcraft work.

Since Joe is former Spec Ops, his larger knife is probably more comfortable to use for his training and background, since a military knife needs to be just as an effective a killing tool as it for wilderness survival. Mykel Hawke was also Spec Ops, so it's no surprise that they both gravitated towards the same kind of blade (TOPS brand knife I believe). One commenter mentioned that they may carry the same knife, I'm not really sure. Maybe one our readers can verify this and leave comment.

Thanks for the reply and just because one guy designed it does not mean another guy cant use it.
What is so wrong with likming or using big blades?
Joe equals Lewis in Deliverance Dave equals banjo player in deliverance...lol
    good luck in vegas!
PS Joe rocked the african axe in on the menu...

  30. Ahh, I was wondering if that might have been you :) Good to hear from you as always.

Regarding large blades, as I mentioned, they have their merits and many people like them, but for bushcraft, tend to be unwieldy for most finer work. Just one blogger's opinion of course, as others may be fine with using them for close stuff.

Now you made me want to go watch Deliverance again, and yes, Joe rocked that axe alright-- right into the ground and into a rock that he was chopping on- yikes! Hasn't he read our axe reviews yet!!! :) Grab a log or even a branch to chop on- NO chopping on rocks or into the ground!

    :)

    Take care,

    Jason

  31. Good Stuff made me laugh.. I like how cody cave manned the catfish with his club..
My absolute favorite new bush knife is the Blackbird SK-5 by OKC
I splurged and just love it...
Almost bought the carbon mora but got the SK5 instead.

  32. Joe may be a legitimate tuff guy but what's with the flamboyant moves when he killed the pig and snake. Act like you've been there before Joe. I watch for information and tips from survival experts not for what a GI Joe would do. An expert soldier is not the same as an expert bushman.

    1. Maybe you don't understand, he was a soldier from the SOF community, which is completely different, after all that IS the point of the show. Surviving with enemy combatants looking for you tends to give you a different mindset in a survival situation don't you think? Apart from the expert bushman am I right?

  33. I thought he looked rediculios and morally repulsive after he killed the Boar. He killed a small Boar. I bet it was someone's pet, and let out of a cage? Kill an animal for food.
Don't gloat about it. I guess he was acting? It wouldn't be surprised if this new dude impales himself during shooting. And no--I don't condone killing anything for Boob Tube
    amusement.

  34. they should make the show with joe and dave and let cody stay at home.

  35. I think Joe was misunderstood and it was overdramatized (tv). A person can break a stick in half making it 2 then 3 then 4......... Something to think about!

  37. The new season is not working for me. How the show highlights all of Joe's military experience is very annoying. I could relate with both Dave and Cody, I can not relate with Joe. Lucky for us Dave has a very active YouTube channel and we can continue to watch him there.

  41. Joe's a hard-on. Watched two episodes with him and it's been hard to keep watching. So far he has drank his piss and acted like an ass after killing a boar. Feel bad for Cody having to deal with this donkey. BRING BACK DAVE!!

  42. Canterbury is gonna be missed. a lot! he & Cody had an underlying mutual respect for one another regardless of all the head-butting going on. I'm not saying the show won't go on but I'm just not as enthusiastic about it. its more than just skill level here (and I for one would certainly wanna partner up with Dave if this place ever got nuked and henceforth everybody for themselves)! yeah the chemistry just worked between these two big guys and as competent and qualified as the new guy is there's something missing. Sincerely wish Dave the best.

  43. no way,to much army attitude, the average survivor/person can't do all that army stuff,,slow and easy not that bear grylls crap,

  44. I really enjoyed watching Dave and Cody together. Not really feeling Joe yet.  Anytime Dave killed an animal, he was respectful about it and realizes that something was giving their life, so he could have life.  I don't feel the same respect from Joe. Also w/ Cody I learn new things - not anything really let with Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Joe seemed like a low budget actor to me. The show was scripted and rehearsed. His military photos looked a lil bit photo shopped. Dave will be missed more and more every week.

  46. Dave was the best - its too bad these scumbags kicked him off the show because he embellished his resume; like who doesn't?

  48. The new guy is awful.  I think he disrespects Cody and what he stands for and is a jerk,  Unless is attitude changes, I'll be changing the channel.  I know I'm only one person but that's one less supporting Cody and I hope the Producers at least consider the viewers.

  51. I don't like the new guy. He doesn't ever seem to consider Cody
s thoughts or ideas. His ego is overwhelming. It's like "Dude, get your dick off the table and shut the hell up." I miss Dave. Thank goodness Cody doesn't back down.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I loved Canterbury, but this new guy is pretty badass.  I think if anybody can pick up where Dave left off its this guy.  As a few more episodes have aired now, you can see how comfortable Cody is becoming with Joe because he is fundamentally safe and sound.  I think Joe is great and now that I have given him a chance, I have already forgotten about Dave and looke forward to more episodes.

  53. Man some of you are just way too sensitive. You're whining over little things and are definately not showing a positive attitude. Too much personal attacks and you guys are quick to disrespect. I can tell JT is actually holding a lot back when it comes to being himself. Hey I get it he's not with his team buddies and is on camera for a damn T.v. show, but I'm not gonna ignore the fact that the man is a professional and brings the other half, (of what the show was SUPPOSED to be), to the set. Different mindsets and priorities organized by experience and knowledge.
